Expectations

My post from Saturday said that I was excited to get the rink, that excitement was quelled after minute 5 of the opening period against Florida.

I, like alot of other Oiler fans have had our expectation level raised by the first game of the season. After last year it was nice to have something to look forward to when going to the rink. But, we all should try to remember what it was like last year and temper excitement with some realistic views.

I was expecting to see a good game from the rookies and some of the vets too. what we got was a lucky win on the back of some good goal-tending again with Khabibulin in net. I'll take the win, but we had some serious defensive breakdowns. I am trying to understand that there are alot of new players that are trying to get used to new systems as well as new line mates, and I'm hoping this is just a learning curve thing. I was definitely reminded of last season watching this game.

The forwards were struggling to complete passes and shooting wide of the net all night long. I think this is more of the type of play that should be expected from a 30th place team in year one of a rebuild.

What I do expect however, is that Northlands get their act together and start treating the fans with the respect they deserve. The Security staff, the Guest Services people and the Ushers are all friendly, helpful, and willing to make your experience enjoyable. What I am referring to is the food and beverage service that is atrocious at Rexall Place. And after the survey that was done earlier in the year about the quality of food in sports arenas, and Rexall comes in last?!? they might've taken the hint.

With the prices being as high as they are, you expect a few little things like; your food to be fresh or at least warm when it is served to you. You expect that your pop be filled to the top of the cup when paying $4.75 per. And you expect that you can ask for a little service to keep the lines moving and the patrons can get back to their seats in time for the next period to start. You get none of this. And yet every year prices keep going up.

You would think this is a learning curve for Northlands too... but I guess I need to change my expectations for the experience on and off the ice at Rexall.

GO Oilers GO!
